In Suwat Village, Gianyar, Bali, water plays an important role as a source of life. The village is rich in hidden springs, making it a natural treasure. One such beauty is Suwat Waterfall, which was once full of mystery and local legends.
Suwat Waterfall has long been known as a sacred and hidden place. According to folklore, an angel once bathed here and left her shawl behind. This story made the location both revered and haunted, so few locals dared to visit.
In 2018, the community began developing Suwat Waterfall as a tourist destination. Despite facing various challenges, including the pandemic in 2019, the Suwat community continued to innovate with a spirit of mutual cooperation. In addition to beautifying Suwat Waterfall, they also created Pengelukatan Siwa Melahangge, a religious tourist spot that offers a spiritual experience through purification rituals. Now, Suwat Village has two main destinations: Suwat Waterfall and Pengelukatan Siwa Melahangge.
Another unique feature of Suwat Village is the annual tradition of the Suwat Water Festival, held at the end of each year on December 30-31 to welcome the New Year. The festival is a form of respect for water as the village's source of life. Various exciting activities enliven this festival, such as duck catching competitions, tug-of-war, and carrying mud-filled ridges. All activities are carried out in waterlogged rice fields, creating a cheerful atmosphere amidst the mud.
The highlight of the festival is the Mendak Tirta and Siat Yeh ritual or “water war,” which is interpreted as a symbol of resistance to bad energy that can hinder life's journey in the new year. Through Siat Yeh, the people of Suwat also show their respect for water as an essential element in life.
With its rich history, culture and natural beauty, Suwat offers an experience that is not only a feast for the eyes, but also introduces the noble values of the Balinese people who are in harmony with nature. A visit to Suwat is not just a tour, but a journey into tradition and harmony of life.
